![]() The old Thunderbirds do not let themselves be transformed easily to mods They were designed for Ford Side Oiler FE blocks ! Thats why its rare for a builder or racer to use the old birds for a swap project! The 390 is a very capable engine with good low end torque and can be built impressively with higher compression and add ons like a well rounded cam for cruising and some impressive full throttle bursts The medium riser heads are very capable of good flow numbers and the low riser heads make for great cruising with no mods< the optional high rise aluminum intake or the tri power fits under the hood very well with no body mod. You'll find that finding front sump BBC pans is not easy, you may end up having to make your own another Sawzall and welding problem. The 454 will not have a pan that will fit it is a rear sump where the Ford is a front sump. The other thing is the FE is a heavy engine, if you get too far from that you're going to be redoing the front suspension. A small block that isn't bored and stroked to the maximum possible just will not produce the mid range torque this thing needs be careful about getting into big horsepower numbers with engines under 400 inches, to use this will take big changes in what I'd guess is a 3 to 1 either 8.5 or 9 inch Ford rear end. This can be outsourced there are lots of shops that specialize in drive-shafts.Ī big block anybody's Chevy, Ford, Caddy, what have you is the solution. Nothing that can't be worked with a Sawzall and welder, the drive shaft would take a shop as accuracy and balance count at this point. This becomes a mount, exhaust and driveshaft interface problem.
